Colour Bass is a subgenre of Brostep that evolved in the mid-2010s. The term was invented by dubstep producer Chime, who also founded Rushdown, the label most recognized for pushing the sound. By 2020, the sound had become a staple in modern bass music.

Colour Bass can be described as a middle point between the melodic and lush production of Melodic Dubstep and Future Bass, and the hard-hitting and upbeat Brostep. In simple terms, Colour Bass is contemporary Brostep, but with a focus on bright and colourful production. The name comes from the "colourful" production.

With Brostep and Melodic Dubstep moving away from each other, there became a vacuum in the bass community. This opened up for producers like Chime to push the sound of melodic bass music, allowing genres like Colour Bass, and it's closely related Melodic Riddim, to grow. While you can find examples of Colour Bass as early as 2014, the sound didn't catch on before the end of 2018. In the last couple of years, there has been a surge of Colour Bass in the commercial bass scene. Veteran labels as Monstercat, Disciple and Lowly Palace have been supporting the new sound. At the same time, Rushdown have been expanding their roster to help showcase up-and-coming producers in the scene.
